Summary
Born in central Texas, Lyndon B. Johnson served as John F. Kennedy’s vice president and was sworn in as president after the assassination. Throughout his term, he urged the nation "to build a great society, a place where the meaning of man's life matches the marvels of man's labor." Turning down the opportunity to run for reelection in 1968 after 37 years in Washington, Johnson retired to his ranch in Texas.
